Vimag Labs Secures Fifth Patent for Software-Defined Magnet-Free Motor Platform

Bengaluru: Vimag Labs has secured its fifth patent in India, strengthening its intellectual property portfolio with protection for the core architecture of its proprietary Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform.

The latest patent reinforces Vimag Labs’ position as it advances commercial deployments of its software-defined, magnet-free electric motor technology across mobility, industrial, defence and robotics applications.

The newly granted patent, titled “A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control,” protects the foundational motor architecture of the company’s Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform.

Unlike conventional Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), which depend on fixed rare-earth magnets embedded in the rotor, the VMSM platform developed by Vimag Labs generates and controls its magnetic field in real time using power electronics and proprietary control algorithms.

The technology enables a brushless, slip-ring-free synchronous motor that delivers performance matching or exceeding permanent magnet-based solutions without requiring any magnets.

With this latest grant, Vimag Labs now holds five granted patents, while another ten patents are in the pipeline. The company has also filed fifteen trademarks covering motor architecture, software controls, power electronics and application-specific implementations.

Commercial deployment expands across mobility and industrial sectors

The newly granted patent strengthens Vimag Labs’ competitive position as the company scales commercial deployments.

The company is currently conducting active pilot projects with established two-wheeler and passenger car manufacturers. It also plans to expand into light commercial vehicles, commercial vehicles and high-power industrial systems ranging from 200 kW to 600 kW.

Beyond transportation, Vimag Labs is developing applications for robotics, defence and cooling systems.

According to the company, the VMSM platform offers OEMs two significant advantages – lower motor costs and reduced dependence on rare-earth magnets, most of which are currently sourced from China.

The technology also aligns with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by enabling indigenous development of critical electric motor technology.

Funding and manufacturing partnerships

Earlier, Vimag Labs raised USD 5 million in its Series A funding round led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate.

The company has also signed a manufacturing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jendamark Pvt. Ltd. to support the production scale-up of its Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform.
